Josh McDaniels was let go today, one day after solidifying his losing season with the Denver Broncos. Team owner, Pat Bowlen stated "In the end, I was not satisfied with the results and direction this team was headed. The decsision to make a change was extremely difficult but one that needed to be made for this organization and our fans."
McDaniels became the youngest Head Coach in the NFL when he took over Mike Shananhan's position with the perennial power-house Denver Broncos, in 2009. They had just come off a 8-8 season, and were looking for someone to get them back to the Playoffs for the first time since 2005.
During McDaniels' first year and a half as a head coach, he put up a 11-17 record and had numerous controversies to deal with. Going 8-8 in an unventful first year, McDaniels stirred up controvery in the off-season with his franchinse QB, Jay Cutler, by attempting to trade the star QB without notifying him first. This continued with more locker room drama causing his players to doubt his leadership ability. Further controversy began when a practice 'recording' scandal took place when his Director of Video Operations, Steve Scarnecchia, recorded practices held by the San Francisco 49ers.
It is my opinion that for most of his NFL coaching career McDaniels has been asked to fill roles that were preceded by some of the best coaches the league has ever seen. In 2006 he took over for Charlie Weis as offensive coordinator of the 3-time Superbowl champion New England Patriots, a position that would be hard for anyone to fulfill (although having Tom Brady helps). As a testament to how well he handled that role, he was offered the job to replace the 2-time Superbowl Champion Coach ShanahanDuring McDaniels' first year and a half as a head coach, he put up a 11-17 record and had numerous controversies to deal with. Pat Bowlen also added was that Eric Studesville, the Running backs coach, will fulfill Head Coaching duties for the reminder of the season.
